Being free is to allow oneself to be completely immersed in the current experience.
We struggle to do that because we tend to think that our circumstances limit us. We forget that the limitations we experience come from our mind’s demands. Giving meaning beyond what is physically already here right now prevents us from being able to fully appreciate what we have right now. Latching on to any thought that is describing what we lack creates a feeling in the body reflecting what we think about.
Why do we choose and persist in thinking and believing in the things that make us feel bad?
We are under the illusion that we are the ones creating our experience by trying to fix what we experience. If you’re busy fixing your bad experiences then this is all you are ever going to do.
Since we are afraid of giving in to our circumstances, giving up on the interpretation we give to circumstance, we get stuck. Unable to free ourselves from the bad things we think about. When our thoughts and beliefs about our circumstances scare us, we find ourselves enslaved by our own minds, looking to solve every bad meaning we give to what is happening to us and around us.
Freedom does not require you to fix anything. You are free of fixing your life. Experience freedom by seeing the obvious truth, that all dissatisfactions you have are coming from your mind that is trying to solve or run away from what you think about yourself, others, or your circumstance. As long as you’re trying to protect yourself from your own thoughts, ideas and beliefs, you are a slave to your own mind.
Most of the time we are not creating any new thoughts, we’re simply repeating old ones. New thoughts come from learning something new. Realize that all you do 99.9% of the time is repeating every old thought and opinion you have. You give up on freedom by agreeing with thoughts such as – This is who I am. This is how things are for me. This is all I can do, etc’.
Do you see that you are a slave of your own thoughts? Do you see that this is a choice you have made? You chose to believe everything you think about.
Prove to yourself that you do have a choice by deciding to ignore everything your mind is throwing at you for the next minute or two. Prove to yourself that if you wanted to you could free yourself from being on autopilot, drifting into same old thoughts, worries, and fears day after day. Just because you had an unpleasant thought there is no need falling into the same old patterns, you can choose to become aware and stay aware until the automatic need to identify and react to your thought disappears.
Practicing pure awareness connects us to our freedom. The same freedom that already allows and contains all our dissatisfactions and does not require anything from us in return except for staying awake and aware of our existence to being free.
